and then there were lots ......

This is one jaboticaba

and a gathering of jaboticaba!

if they are not picked promptly they end up on the ground
and they have a very different growth pattern.  Not a good photo as it was taken after fruit had been picked.  However I have noticed they are often referred to as the grape tree, and often spelt Jabuticaba also.
It's an easy tree to grow, ours is about 6 years old I think.  The main problem is remembering to pick the fruit before other critters get to them, or they fall off the tree.
We usually just eat jaboticaba raw, but I might investigate a few recipes.
They are an unusual fruit with a tough skin and an a grape like texture.
Not a lot of flesh with 2 of 3 seeds inside.

However this picking co-incided with my impulse buy at the markets!
A big box of blood plums (not sure of variety) for $7!
Another bargain.

So I'll be washing, cooking and maybe even bottling some plums. Plum Jam, Plum Jelly, Plums in port maybe? Personally I just like them lightly poached/stewed with yoghurt.
Plum Crumble could feature too.

cheers for now
Wendy

That fruit looks very interesting. I've just bought and planted a kiwiberrie which is a large grape sized fruit related to the kiwi fruit. Kiwiberries are eaten whole and are apparently sweeter than kiwi fruit.

I've heard of this Brasilian fruit, but never seen or eaten it. Plums poached in Port sounds goooooddddd....
I just made Fig Jam last night from a huge 2,5kg pick from our Fig tree!

Well that's funny you should mention that Anne. I must google it. We discovered something that looks remarkably like a kiwi fruit tree. I thought they grew on vines? We planted so many semi tropical fruit trees in the early days we have forgotten them all!

Thanks Sami - I will let you know how that thought progresses ......
Fig jam! Yum. We have just harvested a total of 2 from our tree which was a late starter. More to come though!

So what do those fruits taste like? I've not heard of or seen those before :D I've made on batch of plum sauce, I don't need jam as I've still got heaps in the cupboard. I did find a recipe for plum jelly, I might try that. I still have frozen plums from last year, I might have to make more wine :D

usually just eat them raw Kathy.

I'm planning on making some jam today Sue. Will see how it goes!

Hi CatieAn, yes they are a bit different!

Sue, they have a tough skin, but easy to bite into raw. The texture and taste similar to a grape, not very sweet. Interesting but maybe an acquired taste. You have been busy in the kitchen, might try Sue's plum sauce recipe too!
